Award-winning visual effects studio DNEG invests in Vicon’s Vantage solution with Tracker and Shōgun software
6 February 2020 - Oxford Metrics plc (AIM: OMG) the international software company servicing government, life sciences, entertainment and engineering markets, is pleased to announce that Vicon, a world leader in motion measurement, has signed a contract with visual effects provider, DNEG for Vicon’s flagship Vantage solution utilising both its Tracker and Shōgun software.
With over 20 years of industry experience, London-headquartered DNEG has won the Academy Award for ‘Best VFX’ for four out of the last five years. In total, DNEG has been honoured with five Academy Awards, five BAFTAs, two Emmys and eleven Visual Effects Society Awards.
Coupling this with the high precision of the Vantage system means that Vicon really delivers on our camera tracking requirements..
Isaac Partouche, DNEG’s Head of Virtual Production
Initially, the Vantage system and Tracker software will be utilised for camera tracking during film shoots. Tracking and understanding the exact position of film cameras will enable them to accurately composite live action footage with their visual effects, providing a seamless final production. Adding motion capture to their toolkit will enable the DNEG team to capture the performances of actors and precisely recreate virtual environments within their various studios across the world.
Isaac Partouche, DNEG’s Head of Virtual Production, commented:
“When you are tracking the position of film cameras, especially on a busy set, markers can sometimes be obstructed, which impacts the accuracy of the data. Thanks to features within Vicon’s Tracker software, jitter is minimised when obstructions do happen. Furthermore, adding Vicon’s Shōgun software will also allow us to stream real-time motion capture data direct into a game engine to visualise CG characters. Coupling this with the high precision of the Vantage system means that Vicon really delivers on our camera tracking requirements.”
Nick Bolton, CEO of Oxford Metrics, commented:
“DNEG has delivered some of the most stunning visual effects on blockbuster movies and television series and we are delighted they have chosen Vicon to help with their upcoming productions. Not only have they invested in a solution that delivers on their current requirements, but by adding our Shōgun software, they can extend the capabilities of the system for future productions. We are looking forward to working with them and are excited to see the effects they will go on to produce.”
