Oxford, UK – May 23, 2017 – Vicon, the motion capture (mocap) technology specialist for the entertainment, engineering, virtual reality and life science industries, has announced that Mimic Performance Capture has opened the largest studio employing Vicon Vantage cameras as well as Vicon’s newest VFX mocap software, Shogun. They will offer a wide range of services to fit any production’s needs, time constraints and budget.
“As Vancouver’s largest performance capture studio, it was imperative to equip our facility with state-of-the-art technology,” said Mimic founder Graham Qually. “We chose Vicon not only because of my many years of experience using Vicon systems, but because they continue to provide their customers with high-quality, affordable motion capture technology. We’re very pleased to have Vicon as part of our team.”
Mimic Performance Capture is a fully soundproofed facility located in the heart of Gastown in downtown Vancouver. With a 32,000-cubic foot capture space, three stunt beams spanning the entire space and 40 Vicon Vantage cameras, Mimic is equipped to deliver high-performance results for the most technical projects. The studio also has a 5,000-square foot workshop and prop room that can customize any prop or set needed for shoots.
Vicon Vantage cameras are intelligently designed to work cohesively with all aspects of animation and film production to provide precision data and practical information. It continuously monitors its performance with a host of sensors, which will give Mimic’s technicians visual feedback through the on-board camera display, in the software, and on Vicon’s Control app.
Working with Vicon’s industry-leading cameras, Vicon Shogun gives Mimic real-time metrics on all the key factors affecting camera and system health. This allows the team to quickly recalibrate cameras on the fly within minutes while continuing to capture performances. Shogun’s unrivaled data quality ensures that labeling and solving stays true. With its unbreakable real time, capturing multiple actors undertaking complex interactions is effortless; capably capturing moves such as folding arms, hugs and stunt work with props. With direct support for all the major real-time game engines, pre-visualization and animation processes are enhanced – providing direct visualization of the final scene.
Shogun also allows users to record data direct to disk, meaning onset review is almost instantaneous. This saves countless hours of post-production time and will allow Mimic to focus on the remaining pipeline. These enhancements will help accelerate productions, shaving days off the post-production pipeline while increasing data quality and efficiency.
“We’re excited to partner with Mimic Performance Capture to offer the entertainment industry high-quality, efficient and ground-breaking motion capture to meet the growing demands of game, film and TV productions,” said Jeff Ovadya, Sales Director at Vicon. “With a dedicated team headed by Graham Qually, who we’ve worked with for many years, and an advanced facility featuring Vicon’s latest technology, Mimic has the experience and expertise to deliver high-end results for the most sophisticated projects.”
